The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
