No fewer than 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
